At the Winning
- post

Thanks to the kindness of the friend Giacomo Leotta Strano, I could
be present to the arrivals from a balcony facing the small square
where there was the finishing line.
Stagno in a Fiat arrived first at 8.20, followed by Giusti in a
Diatto (4) (photo on the left), De Maria in a Bianchi (2) and Patanè
in an Ansaldo (5).
|
|
After Patanè there was a long break and then the finishing line
was crossed at high speed by Mr Nino Maravigna in a Spa (7) (photo
on the right); another short break and then here the two Cerano are,
Ferrari is the first (11) and behind, at a very short distance and
with a quicker step, that of Ignoto. |

I get near him again and I ask him news about the competition;
He tells me to have seen De Marco’ s Fiat turning over, but he assures
myself about the safety of the driver and of the mechanic of the small
501 and also to have seen one of the Spa stopped. As soon as I leave
the clever driver of the Cerano, a bomb announced the arrival of another
car: it is Nino Pennisi’s Itala (13), it immediately appears from
the last bend and starts with a certain speed the last straight road
and crossed the finishing-line in a more regular and elegant way;
although he has never participated to other competition, He doesn’t
show too much tiredness; I get near him together with the other friends
and he tells me about the crowd along all the road to the passing
of the cars. While we are around the dear Pennisi the Austro Daimler
(14) arrives. |
I come back
to the balcony, while Orazio Catania’s Spa passes; another bomb announced
the first Nazzaro, in fact we see one of the powerful car turning from
the last bend but then it stops, it ran into a wall and the engine stopped;
everybody thinks the broken car is that driven by Giovanni Catania (15),
but the car leaves again, it gets near, crosses the finishing-line at
a very high speed: it is the Cav. Vigo Cordaro (16). He arrives after
two car crashes and tells his mate Giovanni Catania ran into the wall
at the second-last bend and he was obliged to leave it, he is unhurt and
his mechanic has just a small scratch.
The Victory
Other two cars have to pass: and that’s one of these is announced
by the usual bomb. He turned very well and crossed the finishing-line
at high speed: it is Paolo Catania (18), he looks a little tired while
his mechanic, Mario Vitale doesn’t show any trace of tiredness. Then
the small, pretty Dall’Oglio’s OM arrives. Today one of our fellow
citizens wins the competition. He is Paolo Catania, today victory
is due thanks to his constant and productive labour and to his good,
technical and practical knowledge of the car. Our more sincere and
warm congratulations to him. |
|
But the other cars were not overcome by the Florentine
sister: the Cerano arrived at the second place thanks to Salvatore
Ignoto from Acireale, while Mr Maravigna was very clever with the
Spa; the grey Torinese car classified second in its category arriving
at the fourth place in the general classification at less than a
minute of distance from Paolo Catania’s Nazzaro, even if lower for
the horsepower and the swept volume.
Our congratulation also to Ignoto Platania and Maravigna. A warm
greeting to Giovanni Catania, to a skilful and fastest driver from
Acireale who could be first if the adverse fortune did not have
struck him.
