He was born on January 16 1869, died in Rome on March 1938. After
finishing his studies at the Universities in Naples and Rome, he
took a degree in medicine at the University in Rome in 1894. He
was student and favourite collaborator of the famous clinical Professor
A. D’Antona, manager of the Pathology Institute and Propaedeutics
Surgical Clinic at the University in Naples, where he worked as
assistant for many years.
He published a treatise on the ‘ General Anaesthesia by chloroform
and ether’ where he launched an attack against the supposed innocuousness
of the chloroform in comparison with the ether in the general anaesthesia
(a much-discussed question in the field of surgery in that day),
that established the removal of that dangerous anaesthetic, that
was generally used everywhere in the operating theatre. In relation
to the same topic he published another work on “ Albumineria from
Chloroform “
He went back to Sicily, where he continued his work and actively
dabbled in politics, promoting the economic and social development
of the region. In July 1912 he moved to the US to help the Italian
emigrants He was welcomed with great affection from his fellow countrymen
generally Sicilians. In Boston and in Lawrence Mass. The local political
authorities looked at him with great suspicion. He had to pass an
examination in English to be able to help as a doctor the Italians
and took a first class degree with full marks in the state of Massachusetts.
Going back to Sicily at the beginning of the world war he dedicated
himself to help the soldiers ‘ families. He was a courageous supporter
of the Sicilian beauty and generosity and of the cleverness of his
men.
He was Mayor of Trecastagni and Chairman of the Trecastagni – Cicirello
Etna Road Society, whose aim was to increase the value of the agricultural
and tourist possibilities of the Etnean region.
In the last years he dedicated himself to the agriculture, especially
to the problem of the vine-grower. One of his works about the vine-grower
crises and the concrete remedies to achieve a solution was considered
of great interest from the Sen. Marescalchi ex Undersecretary of
State in the department of Agriculture and Forests. He was conferred
of the Commenda of the Corona d’Italia
